Normally, the visual axes of both eyes are parallel. If the visual axes lose their parallel alignment, the patient experiences double vision when looking with both eyes. This condition can develop due to problems with the eye muscles or the nerves controlling them, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, neurological diseases, increased intracranial pressure, or tumors.

A detailed examination and medical history in patients with double vision help guide the investigation of the underlying cause. Your doctor may request additional tests such as thyroid function tests, neurological examination, MRI, or EMG to identify the underlying problem.

The goal of treatment is to identify and address the condition causing double vision. In some cases, even if the underlying cause is treated, diplopia may not completely resolve. Botulinum toxin injections or strabismus surgery may be required.
