Routine eye check-ups for children begin in the newborn period and continue until the age of 18. Especially during the first month of life, an eye examination is essential to detect congenital cataracts, strabismus, glaucoma, eyelid anomalies, as well as early identification of tear duct obstructions.

The 6-month and 1-year check-ups should also be performed by an eye specialist, evaluating the baby’s eye contact, eye movements, refractive errors, red reflex, and eyelid abnormalities.

One of the main goals of these examinations is to prevent amblyopia (lazy eye). Other objectives include early detection and timely intervention for congenital cataracts, glaucoma, and intraocular lesions.
